Host Capital University held a two-point lead with 12:23 left in the second half, and behind a solid second half finish, held off a late Mount charge on Sunday evening as they posted a 75-68 win. The Mount falls to 3-2 with the loss, and will play next on Dec. 4 in their HCAC season opener at Transylvania University.
After a 31-tie at the intermission, the Crusaders edged ahead of the Mount early in the second half, and held just a 48-46 lead after a basket by the Mount's Femi Thompson (Cincinnati, OH/Aiken) with just over 7 1/2 minutes left in the game. They would build that lead to 54-48 by the 8:37 mark, thanks to a solid inside-outside offensive attack, and accurate free throw shooting. Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) converted two free throw attempts with 4:07 to play, to cut the deficit to 61-57 but Capital would make 12-of-15 free throw attempts to hold off the Lions and even their record at 2-2 on the season.
Capital University out-shot the Lions from the field, 47 to 41 percent, while the Mount had seven, three-pointers to Capital's four baskets from long range. The Crusaders were 29-of-39 from the free throw line while the Lions connected on 19-of-25 from the charity stripe. Capital also won the battle of the boards, 34-29. The Mount committed 13 turnovers and forced 10 Capital miscues. Scudder fired in a game-high tying 18 points while Thompson added 13 points and four rebounds. Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) chipped in 12 points.
