Ken Kunkel (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) and teamate Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) each had five points in overtime on Thursday night, as the Mount pulled out a 61-57 overtime win at Albion College. The Lions improved to 6-2 on the season, while Albion dropped to 5-3. The Mount returns to action on Dec. 20 with a game at cross-river rival Thomas More College.
The Lions led by three points at the half tonight, 27-24, thanks to out-rebounding their opponents, 16-11, and hitting seven-of-nine first half free throws. Albion, however, out-shot the Mount from the field over the first 20 minutes of play, 46 to 39 percent, as the Lions went just two-of-11 from behind the three-point arc. The Mount, however, maintained its advantage throughout the first 10 minutes of play in the second half, before Albion knotted the score at 37-all.
Both teams would hold the lead through the remaining minutes of regulation. The knotted the score one last time, 47-all, with 2:19 when Femi Thompson (Cincinnati, OH/Aiken) made a basket. Kunkel connected on two free throws with just over 1 1/2 minutes to play, to give his team a two-point edge, only to see Albion tied the score at 49-all with 1:05 on the clock. Thompson put the Lions ahead again, on a lay-up with 32 seconds to play, but Albion tied the score with four seconds left to force OT.
Allen got the scoring started for the Mount in overtime, hitting a basket with 4:13 to play, and Kunkel's three-pointer with 20 seconds left gave the Lions a 59-55 advantage. Kunkel added two free throws with nine seconds left to seal the win.
Thompson finished with 13 points while Allen added 11 points and five rebounds. The Mount converted 14-of-17 free throw attempts in the game.
