Lions' senior forward David Mann (Fairfield, OH/Cincinnati Christian) made a three-point shot with seven seconds to play in regulation, putting him over the 1,000 career point level in college, to give his team a 65-64, only to see host Earlham College tie the game with two seconds left and win the game 78-72 in overtime on Saturday. The Mount falls to 11-7 overall, 8-4 in the HCAC and returns to play on Feb. 5 when they host Transylvania University.
The Lions held a 30-28 at the half over the Quakers, thanks to a balanced scoring attack paced by Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) and Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) in the first half, Scudder scored nine points in the first half, helping the Mount overcome an early 24-15 deficit while Allen chipped in eight points and four rebounds. Mann's basket at the buzzer gave the Lions a 30-28 lead heading into the locker room. The Mount was aided in the first half by holding a 19-12 advantage in the rebounding battle.
The Mount held the lead throughout the early part of the second half, forging ahead by 43-30 with 15:12 to play when Bobby Murdock (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) connected on a trey. The Quakers battled back with a versatile scoring attack, eventually tying the game on a three-pointer of their own with 4:24 left in regulation. Earlham took a two-point lead with 3:14, on two free throws, before Mann cut the deficit to 63-62 wth 27 seconds left on a three-pointer than the Lions' senior gave the team a one-point lead with another three-pointer, putting him over 1,000 career points, with seven seconds left in the game. Earlham hit one-of-two free throws with seconds left to tie the game at 65-all and send the game into overtime.
The Quakers grabbed the first lead in overtime and held it throughout, despite a tie at 67-all. Earlham converted six-of-eight free throws while the Mount was five-of-six from the free throw line in the overtime period. The Lions were one-of-seven, however, from the field in the extra five minute period.
Scudder led the Mount with 23 points, including four, three-pointers, while Allen added 20 points and eight rebounds. Mann finished with 10 points and five rebounds, and now has 1,002 points in his Mount career. Earlham held a 45 to 38 percent shooting advantage, including 43 to 39 percent from three-point range, and made 21-of-27 free throws to the Lions' 17-of-22 from the charity stripe. The Quakers grabbed two more rebounds than the Lions, but committed 11 turnovers to the Mount's eight miscues.
