The Lions fired in a team-high tying 18 three-point field goals today, including 12 in the first half - in 16 attempts, as they recorded their second straight, plus-90 point offensive explosion with a 92-63 win at home over Manchester College. The win enables the Mount to keep pace with the HCAC leaders. The Lions are now 14-8 overall, and 11-5 in the conference (tied for third with Hanover). Rose-Hulman leads the HCAC with a 14-2 mark while runner-up Defiance is 13-3. The Mount will host both Anderson, Feb. 19; and Rose-Hulman, Feb. 22, to complete regular season play.
The Mount got three-point field goals from seven different players in the first 20 minutes of action against the Spartans, converting 12-of-17 attempts from long range, as they raced out to a 56-29 lead at the intermission. Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) and Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) led the first half barrage as they scored 15 and 13 points respectively, combining to shoot 11-for-11 from the field and six-of-six from three-point range. The Mount out-shot the Spartans, 71 to 31 percent in the opening half, and won the battle of the boards, 18-13. Manchester was successful on just one-of-11 three-point shots.
While the Lions shooting cooled in the second half, they were never challenged for the lead, holding a plus-20 point advantage througout the second half. The Mount connected for six more treys in the second half, making 18 for the game from long range tying the team record set during the 2012-2013 season against Olivet College. Allen led the way with a game-high 28 points, while Scudder chipped in 16 points in the game. The Mount had 11 players crack the scoring column against the Spartans, who shot just 38 percent from the field in the game. The Lions converted 10-of-10 free throws, as well. David Mann (Fairfield, OH/Cincinnati Christian) and Ken Kunkel (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) had five rebounds each, while Kunkel added a game-high six assists.
