Box Score 2 The Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team recorded a 1-1 record today in action as host of the final day of the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational. The Lions opened play with a 3-1 win over Lakeland College and then concluded the day's action with a 3-2 loss against Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). The Mount goes to 3-2 on the season and will be back in action on Jan. 31 when they play at the Thiel College Invitational and take on Nazareth College and Thiel.
In the Mount's first match of the day against Lakeland College, the Lions raced out to a 2-0 sets lead, winning 25-20, 26-24. They had a particularly strong hitting attack in the first set, connecting for a plus-.400 hitting efficiency. Both sets, however, ended on attack errors by Lakeland College. The Lions dropped the third set, 25-17, trailing the entire set. They posted the win in set four, registering a 25-20 victory. Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) and Cesar Trigo de Serrano (Miami, FL/Christopher Columbus) keyed the fourth set with numerous kills.
Vohland had 16 kills while teammate Toby Birnbrich (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) and de Serrano had nine kills each. Lyle Lehmann added 10 digs while Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had 40 assists and two service aces.
Match number two of the day saw the Lions and MSOE split the first four sets, with the Mount winning sets one and four, both by identical 25-22 scores. MSOE posted wins in sets two and three, 25-19 and 25-14. In the deciding fifth set, MSOE took advantage of three early Mount errors to grab a 4-1 lead. The Lions, however, would battle back and knot the score first at 4-all. After ties at each point up through 10-10, MSOE forged ahead 14-10, thanks to a varied hitting attack. The Lions would close to within 14-12, after two MSOE errors, but the visitors would claim the victory on a kill, making the score 15-12.
Vohland once again helped lead the offense with a 12 kills while Adam Williams (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) and Jake Neiheisel (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) had nine kills each. Eschenbach chipped in 35 assists and 11 digs while Vohland recorded 10 digs. Vohland, Neiheisel and Birnbrich each had three block solos.
Lions' Head Coach Ryan Lengerich had this to say about his team's play on Sunday, and for the invitational.
"This a was a good weekend on the whole,'' Lengerich said. "We beat a very talented Lakeland team and should be proud of that. We just fell short against a great MSOE team. It's a tough task to go back-to-back against quality opponents, but I'm confident we can fix some of the mistakes we made."
