Lions' men's basketball team posts an 83-51 home win over Earlham College

The Mount Lions got off to a strong start on Saturday afternoon against the Earlham College Quakers, hitting 67 percent of their shots in the opening half, and forcing 14, first half turnovers, as they raced out to a 49-21 lead at the intermission on their way to an 83-51 win. The Lions improved to 15-4 overall, and continued their hold on first place in the HCAC with a 10-2 mark. The Mount resumes play on Feb. 4 when they play at conference-foe Transylvania University. The Lions are one-game ahead of both HCAC runner-ups Defiance College and Anderson University.

The Lions raced out to leads of 15-9 and 23-11 in the first half, thanks to a diversified scoring attack, and a shutdown defense. The lead balooned to 28 points, at 47-19, when Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) connected on a three-pointer with just over one minute left in the first half. The Lions made 18-of-27 shots from the field in the opening half of play, and connected on 11-of-15 free throw attempts, while forcing numerous turnovers. Allen led the first half offensive attack with 12 points. All nine Mount players that saw action in the first half had at least two points.

The Mount would move on to post their biggest lead of the game, with 9:36 to play in the game, after Erik Edwards (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) converted a lay-up to make the score 72-36. The Lions substiuted liberally from the five minute mark to the end of the game, as 14 players saw game action and 12 got into the scoring column.

Allen had a game-high tying 12 points, while Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Edwards chipped in 10 points and four rebounds while Jordan  Henry (Lexington, KY/Bryan Station) had nine points and five rebounds. The Mount forced 20 turnovers and committed just six miscues. The Lions finished the game making 17-of-21 free throws, good for 81 percent. They also had a 30-26 rebounding lead.
