Lions' men's volleyball team wins fifth straight with a 3-0 home victory against Fontbonne University

Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) had 12 kills and teammate Toby Birnbrich (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) added 10 kills on Friday night as the Lions recorded a 3-0 home win over Fontbonne University in MCVL action. The 13th-ranked Mount, winners of five straight matches, goes to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The two teams will battle again, in a non-conference, on Feb. 14 in the Harrington Center.

The two Lions' frontcourt players led a strong start in the first set, helping their team out to an 8-2 lead. The set would become more competitive over the next few points, but the Mount still led by a 20-12 score after a kill by Vohland. Birnbrich would record the set winning kill, making the final 25-20 in the opener. The Mount out-hit Fontbonne, .226 to .038 in the first set.

The two teams played closely throughout the early going in the second set, until the Lions began to pull away. A Fontbonne service error gave the Lions a 14-10 lead, before Fontbonne rebounded to grab a 16-15 lead thanks to scoring off various attacks. They would hold their last lead at 23-22, with the Lions claiming the last three points of the second set, thanks to two Fontbonne errors and a kill by Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle).

Set number three saw the two teams tied at 10-all, and then the Lions pull away, due to kills by Vohland and attack errors by Fontbonne. The Mount would push their lead to 18-12, before Fontbonne narrowed the deficit to 20-17. Richie Planek (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) and Vohland would register kills down the stretch, with the Mount posting a 25-18 third set win to claim the match, 3-0.

Lyle Lehmann (Rapid City, SD/Rapid City Central) added a match-high nine digs while Alec King (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle0 added five digs and two service aces. Eschenbach had 35 assists. Birnbrich added four block solos.
