Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) recorded a match-high 18 kills and a added 11 digs as the Mount registered a 3-1 home win on Sunday afternoon against MCVL-foe Loras College. The Lions, 11-5 overall, are currently in third place of the league with a 5-2 mark, trailing Carthage College, 6-0 and Domininican (IL) University, 5-1. The Mount returns to action on March 6 at Fontbonne University.
The Mount led in the first set by a 7-6 score then reeled off five straight points to push ahead, 12-6. They would hold a solid lead throughout the rest of the set, with Darien Bradley (Las Vegas, NV/Arbor View) contributing the last two points off kills, for a 25-20 win. The Lions held Loras to a -.069 hitting efficiency in the first set.
The Mount went up 2-0 in sets, as they recorded a second set 25-17 win. After a tie at nine-all, Vohland and teammate Adam Williams (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) led the offense with solid hitting, leading to the Lions taking a 16-13 lead. With the Mount ahead 18-16, Loras five straight errors, helping the Lions to a 23-16 lead. Vohland recorded a service aces for the set two winner.
Loras College grabbed set number three in the match, 25-22. Loras broke open a 16-all tie with four straight points at the end to go up 21-17. The Lions battled back to cut the deficit to two points, twice, the last time at 24-22, before a Loras killed ended the set.
Set number four saw the Lions jump out to leads of 10-6, and 14-9, thanks for the hitting of Williams and Richie Planek (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South). They would imporve on that lead to 18-12, and take the final set, 25-18, for the 3-1 win over Loras.
Planek added eight kills in the match while Williams chipped in seven kills. Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had 35 assists and seven digs. Lyle Lehmann (Rapid City, SD/Rapid City Central) had 11 digs for the Lions.
Mount Head Coach Ryan Lengerich had this to say about his team's win today over Loras College.
"It's that time of the year when bodies are sore and tired,'' Lengerich said. "We were fighting some illness and injuries but some guys really stepped up and did some good things."
"I'm happy we got some guys who have put in the work some time on the court. Now we have two weeks on the road and we need to come together as a team."
