Mount men's volleyball team clinches MCVL Tournament berth with 3-1 home win over Lakeland College

The 13th-ranked Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team clinched a berth in the April 10-11 MCVL Tournament on Friday night at home with a 3-1 victory over Lakeland College. The Lions posted scores of 25-22,23-25, 31-29, 26-24 as they continued their hold on second place in the league, upping their mark to 10-3. The Mount is 17-8 overall, setting a new program mark for most victories in a season, eclipsing last season's win total of 16. 

The Lions will be back in action on March 29 when the close 2015 regular season play with a league home match against Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) had a match-high 20 kills and teammate Toby Birnbrich (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) added 13 kills, hitting at a .524 efficiency mark, as the Mount recorded 60 kills as a team. The Mountled 12-10 in the first set, and stretched out that advantage to 23-17, thanks to kills by three different players, en route to the first set win. Lakeland rebounded in the second set to tie the match at one-all, before the Mount took the match's last two sets, by hitting over .200 in each set.

Birnbrich ended the third, hard-fought set, with a kill while the fourt set ended on an attack error by Lakeland College.

Vohland also had nine digs, while teammate Lyle Lehmann (Rapid City, SD/Rapid City Central) added a match-high 17 digs. Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had 54 assists and Jake Neiheisel (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) had three block solos and three block assists. The Mount totaled ten blocks in the game.

Mount Head Coach Ryan Lengerich had this to say about his team's win against Lakeland College.

"I'm so proud of the guys for all the work they put in up to this point and taking the next step of getting into the tournament,'' Lengerich stated. "It's an exciting step for the program. They really dug deep tonight for that win."

"We can't rest, we have another huge match Sunday for our seniors, and we have more goals to accomplish at the tournament."
