The Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team ended the regular season portion of their 2015 schedule on Sunday afternoon at home, claiming their fifth straight win, a 3-0 victory over MSOE on Senior Day. The Lions, 18-8 overall, 11-3 in the Midwest College Volleyball League, will be idle until the MCVL Tourament, which will take place on April 10-11. The Lions will be the number two seed in the tournament; with Carthage College the top seed and Dominican the third third seed. MSOE and Lakeland are vying for the fourth and final seed.
The Lions recorded set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16 as they finished play this season 2-1 against MSOE. The Mount held MSOE to a .022 hitting percentage, while connecting on .271.
Alec King (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) paced the Mount with 13 kills, hitting .500, while adding a team-high six digs. Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) had six kills and five digs while Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) added 29 assists and three digs. Jake Neiheisel (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) and teammate Toby Birnbrich (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) each had three block solos and three block assists, as the Lions recorded 11 team blocks. MSOE had five blocks in the game.
The team's three seniors Cesar Trigo de Serrano (Miami, FL/Christopher Columbus), Eschenbach and King were honored at the game.
Mount Head Coach Ryan Lengerich was pleased with his team's play in the last regular season match.
"The seniors were sensational today and our week of preparation culminated with perfect execution of the game plan."
"Alec King was unstoppable and the whole team played so clean,'' Lengerich said. "I'm really happy for the guys. Now we have two weeks to get healthy and prepared for the tournament."
