The Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team took a step closer to capturing their first ever league title on Friday night when they defeated Dominican (IL) University, 3-2 in the semfinals of the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League Tournament. The Lions, 19-8 overall, and ranked 12th in the nation, will take on top-seeded and eighth-ranked Carthage College (22-6) at Carthage on April 11 in the finals of the tournament.
Set scores against Domincan were, 25-19, 25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 15-9. The Mount recorded a .304 team hitting percentage, with Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) leading the Lions with a .385 hitting percentage, recording 28 kills. Toby Birnbrich (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) had 11 kills and a .600 hitting percentage, while teammate Adam Williams (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) added eight kills. Vohland also had 10 digs while Lyle Lehmann (Rapid City, SD/Rapid City Central) added a match-high 20 digs. Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had 53 assists and four services aces in the match.
The Lions also had eight blocks in the match, while Dominican was held to just a .162 hitting percentage. The victory was the Mount's sixth straight.
