Men's basketball locks down historic win at Defiance

Box Score

LOCATION: Defiance, Ohio (Karl H. Weaner Center)

THE BASICS
Mount St. Joseph University (6-5,3-1 HCAC) triumphs over Defiance College (5-6,3-1 HCAC) 72-67, leaving no unbeaten teams early in the HCAC schedule.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount St. Joseph started the game off white-hot from three, as Joel Scudder hit two 3-point baskets right out of the gate.

The Yellow Jackets also got off to a hot start from deep as they shot 6-for-12 from behind the arc in the first half, which lifted them to a 39-30 lead at the break.

The second half started much like the first as Scudder hit two quick 3-pointers. The Lions quickly chewed into the Yellow Jackets lead, taking the lead for the first time since the early going on a layup by Erik Edwards at the 11:15 mark of the second half.

The Lions shot a scintillating 57 percent in the second half to come back and win the game 72-67. The Lions utilized a stingy defense to hold Defiance scoreless for over the last 5:50 of the game, before a meaningless last-second three pointer to end the game.

The win was the first at Defiance in five years under head coach Toby Carrigan.

STANDOUTS
Scudder led the way with 21 points and 5 rebounds. Travis Combs chipped in 15 points, scoring 10 in the second half alone on 4-4 shooting. Tyler Manaugh led the way on the boards pulling down 7 rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Lions travel to Bluffton University (7-3, 2-1 HCAC) on Wednesday, with the game set for 7:30 p.m.
