Mount St. Joseph women's basketball beats Hanover, clinches postseason spot

THE BASICS
The Lions (9-15, 5-12) defeated Hanover College (8-16, 7-10) 75-71 in a tightly contested game and clinched a spot in the HCAC tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions started off the game with incredible defense, keeping close to the Panthers the first quarter and only trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter. 

Erica Walsh made a layup in the second quarter with 1:57 remaining to take the lead by six. Due to fouls from the Lions the Panthers made five free throws to tie the Lions at half, 36-36. 

The second half saw the score remain tight, with the lead exchanging hands multiple times over the final 20 minutes of the game. 

Ciera Phillips came through to take a two point lead with 8 minutes remaining. Phillips made a layup with 12.4 seconds remaining and Lainee Studer put up two free throws to seal the game, 75-71.

STANDOUTS
Studer led the Lions with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Phillips had 14 points and 9 rebounds. Bristyl Webb had 13 points and 4 rebounds. Brilyn Webb, Hartfiel and Walsh all ended with 10 points.

UP NEXT
The Lions take on Earlham College on Saturday in the Harrington Center at 1 p.m.
