THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph University (9-16, 8-10 HCAC) could not overcome a slow start, and a second-half spurt was not enough at Transylvania University (18-7, 14-4 HCAC) as Transy rolled to an 87-74 win against the Lions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Meredith Hartfiel started out the game on fire as she scored the first 6 points in just two minutes. The Mount offense stalled an the Lions trailed 26-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Things did not get much better in the second quarter and the the Lions trailed at half, 46-24.
In the third quarter the Lions kept close with the Pioneers, with a jump shot by Hartfiel cutting the lead to 66-50.
With time winding down in the fourth quarter the Pioneers dominated play and hit all its free throws down the stretch to extend the lead and seal the game.
STANDOUTS
Hartfiel led the Lions with 22 points to bring an end to her senior year. Ciera Phillips had 10 points and added 5 assists. Lainee Studer ended with 10 points as well.
