THE BASICS:
The No. 11 ranked Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team (16-6, 8-2 MCVL) racked up three sweeps this weekend including two crucial conference wins against Fontbonne University on Senior Night and Saturday morning against Greenville College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday:
The Lions started slow against visiting Fontbonne (11-8, 3-7 MCVL) after a 30-minute delay due to a sprinkler malfunction. The Lions trailed 22-19 and 23-21 before a 4-point serving run by Chris Ales sparked the home team. The Lions would close out the set 27-25 on a Jake Neiheisel block.
The Lions held a 19-16 lead in set two before a Fontbonne rally. An Alex Vohland kill sealed the win 25-23. In set three the Lions committed 10 serving errors but won handily 25-21 thanks to three kills off the bench from Richie Planek.
Saturday:
MSJ once again struggled to get separation from a young but talented Greenville College team (10-11, 4-7 MCVL). Solid offense, including a .423 attacking percentage gave the Lions the 25-21 lead. MSJ found set two a little easier, winning 25-16 and eventually closed the match out 25-22.
The Lions had no trouble with Illinois Institute of Technology (0-18), winning 25-18, 25-10, 25-23.
