The Basics:
The Lions opened conference play with a big win against Olivet College. Mount St. Joseph was able to seal the win after three sets to defeat the Comets with Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/ Lakota West) leading the way.
How it happened:
The teams stayed close at the beginning of the first set. After being tied 5-5, the Lions began to step up and take control. Mount St. Joseph was up 16-10 when the Lions got somewhat off track. Multiple errors back to back made it possible for Olivet to stay in the game and tie it up 16-16. The Lions showed their strength and continued to compete. They were able to take a hold of the lead once again and this time, they weren't giving it up. The Lions were victorious in the first set with a score of 19-25.
The second set started with Olivet fighting back. The Lions struggled to get the offense in rhythm with multiple errors to give Olivet the lead 8-4 early in the match. The Lions began to rally. Playing from behind, their game got better. They were able to find their chemistry to take the lead. Alex Vohland took over at the serving line, scoring 3 points for the lions all on service aces. This topped the lions 6 point run to finish the set with another win. The final for the second set was 25-16.
The final set was controlled by the Lions. They were able to jump to a 9-3 lead early in the set with kills coming from multiple players on the Lions squad. Mount St. Joseph was able to outlast Olivet with the final point coming from a kill by Alex Vohland, to give the Lions the win in the third set 25-13. This gave the Lions the win in the match over Olivet 3-0.
Standouts:
Alex Vohland continues to be a vital part of this Mount St. Joseph team. He led the team with 10 kills on 18 attempts. Brett Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/ La Salle) was also able to spark some offense for the Lions recording 9 kills on 13 total attempts.
