Lions battle top HCAC team for second straight game

DELHI, Ohio -- Mount St. Joseph faced one of the top teams in the HCAC for the second straight game.  On Saturday the Lions battled first-place Rose-Hulman and today they took on third-place Transylvania.  Through the early going Mount St. Joseph looked primed to pull off an upset.  After falling behind in the first quarter the Lions were able to close the gap in the second quarter.  Heading into halftime Mount St. Joseph trailed by a slim margin 34-29.

The third quarter was the downfall for the Lions.  After a very hot second quarter Mount St. Joseph was outscored 31-10 by Transylvania in the third quarter.  After putting themselves in a tough position going into the fourth quarter the Lions were able to outscore the Pioneers in the final frame.  Although Mount St. Joseph was able to close the gap down the stretch they were unable to get back into the game and take the lead, falling to Transylvania 74-55.

GAME NOTES

  • Emily Townsend (Dillsboro, IN / South Dearborn) led the Lions in scoring, dropping 11 points and doing most of her damage at the free throw line, going 5-6 from the stripe.
  • Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH / Little Miami) had another great game for Mount St. Joseph.  She had the game high in rebounds with 10 and was one point away from a double-double, scoring 9.
  • The Lions defense was ferocious on Wednesday night.  They were able to force 16 turnovers agains the Pioneers.

Up next for the Lions is Franklin at home on Saturday.  This is the last home game for the women's basketball team this season.  Come out to the Harrington Center on Saturday at 4:00 PM to route on your Lions for the last time in 2017.
