The Basics:
The Lions faced a tough team this past Tuesday. Wittenberg and Mount St. Joseph went back and forth in a competitive matchup. Wittenberg was able to pull out the win 3-2, after the game went to five sets.
How it Happened:
In a competitive conference competition, Mount St. Joseph and Wittenberg looked to be an intense matchup. In the first set the Lions tried to start off strong. It was kept close for most of the set, until the Lions pushed ahead after being tied 18-18. The Lions were able to take the first set after a service ace by Darien Bradley (Las Vegas, NV/ Arbor View). The set was won 25-23. In the second set the competition remained close. The Lions jumped out to a small lead early in the match, but Wittenberg wouldn't go down easy. Wittenberg fought back to win the second set 25-22 to make the match an even 1-1. The Lions looked to take back control in the third set. They started off hot, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Wittenberg followed closely behind the Lions, but weren't able to close the lead. The Lions won the third set 25-20. In the fourth set Wittenberg fought to stay alive. They were able to top the Lions to win the set 25-22 to force the fifth set. In the final set, Wittenberg was able to put together a string of points to take the lead and win the set 15-11. This gave Wittenberg the win in the match overall 3-2.
Standouts:
Andrew Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH/ Oak Hills) lead the Lions on the offensive end with 15 kills on 28 attempts. Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/ Lakota West) also was able to make an impact by recording 12 kills on 36 attempts. On the defensive side of the net, Joey Piazza (Cuyahoga Falls, OH/ Walsh Jesuit) stood out for the Lions recording 18 digs.
