The Basics:
The Lions looked to get back on track as they traveled to Wisconsin to face Marian University. The Lions started off slow losing the first set, but were able to turn the momentum to win three straight sets. The Lions defeated Marian 3-1.
How it Happened:
The Lions started of trying to find their rhythm in the first set. They kept it close throughout the set and were tied with Marian 15-15 at one point. After that, Marian was able to jump in the lead and take the first set 25-19. The Lions looked to turn the tides in the second set. The Lions stepped up on both sides of the net to stall the Marian momentum and take the second set 25-20. Mount St. Joseph was able to continue to play at this level of intensity in the third set as well. They started off by jumping out to a 4-0 lead after a kill by Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/ Lakota West). The offense for the Lions started to come to life with kills coming from multiple players to maintain the lead. The Lions were able to keep the lead the rest of the set and defeated Marian 25-22. Mount St. Joseph looked to close the match out as they headed into the fourth set. Marian wouldn't make it easy for the Lions as they lead the set at the beginning. After being down 13-10, the Lions started to turn it on. With kills from Alex Vohland and Brett Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/ La Salle) they were able to jump out to an 18-15 lead. This set the Lions up to win the set 25-22 and win the match overall 3-1.
Standouts:
Mount St. Joseph's offense was led by senior Alex Vohland with 18 kills on 35 attempts. He was able to make some kills for the Lions at key moments to push them to victory. On the defensive side of the net, Darrell Swanson (Las Vegas, NV/ Arbor View) was able to record an impressive 16 digs. This was huge in the Lions efforts to stop Marian from scoring.
