Mount St. Joseph faces Defiance at Mount Madness

The Basics:

Mount St. Joseph faced HCAC competitor Defiance College at Mount Madness. Before the game the Lions honored former player #22 Lauren Hill with a moment of silence. The Lions showed they were ready to compete as the lead changed multiple times in the first quarter. Defiance was able to jump ahead before halftime 38-31. The game continued to be a shootout as both teams were clicking on offense. Defiance was able to increase their lead and defeat the Lions with a final score of 86-70.

How it Happened:

This weekend the Lions welcomed Defiance to the Harrington Center for Mount Madness. Before the game the crowd came together in a moment of silence for the former Mount player Lauren Hill.  A jersey was presented to her father Brent Hill from head coach Dan Benjamin.  The game started off with an offensive show from freshman guard Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mother of Mercy). She was red hot as she went 3-3 on three pointers in the first quarter.  The Lions were tied with the Yellow Jackets 16-16 at the end of one. In the second quarter the score stayed close. Haberthy continued to dominate from the three point line and scored another 9 points in the quarter. Defiance was able to end the half on a 7-0 run to give them the lead over the Lions before halftime with a score of 38-31. The Mount struggled to decrease the deficit in the second half. Defiance was able to increase their lead at the end of the third quarter with the score at 58-45. The Lions fought hard in the fourth but came up short to Defiance with a final score of 86-70.

Standouts:

Haberthy was outstanding as she was able to finish the game with 29 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds. She had a great day of shooting, draining 7-9 from three point range. Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/ Holy Cross) was able to finish with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) also stood out on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. She ended the game with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals.   

Up Next:

The Lions (10-11, 6-8) will travel to Lexington, KY this coming Wednesday, 2/7. They will take on Transylvania (16-5, 11-3) in another HCAC matchup. The game is set to tip off at 7:30 PM.
