Lions Fight Back, Get First Win of Season Over the Ravens

Delhi, Ohio – Mount St. Joseph University women's basketball team welcomed the Ravens of Anderson University to the Harrington Center on Saturday in another Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match up. With the Lions still on the search for their first win as they entered the game with an 0-6 overall record and a 0-2 HCAC record. The Ravens came into the Harrington Center with an 2-5 overall record and a 0-2 HCAC record.

The game got underway on Saturday with the Ravens taking a quick 2-0 lead over the Lions with two free throws. They would go on to build their lead with a layup before the Lions would get on the board. Aliyah Huff (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) got the scoring under way for the Lions at 8:48 left in the first quarter with a layup. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) would bring the game within one with a three pointer. At 7:37 left in the quarter the Ravens led the Lions 6-5. Every time the Ravens seemed to start to gain a lead over the Mount the Lions would seem to keep themselves within the game. With 5:03 left in the first quarter Chloe Jansen (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) made a three-point jump shot. Over the next three minutes the Lions trailed the Ravens 13-11. In the remainder of the quarter the Ravens capitalized on some free throws and a couple of three-pointers to take a 21-13 lead with less than a minute to go. Aliyah Huff would get the final points of the quarter with a layup. The Lions trailed the Ravens 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Ravens would continue to build their lead but the Lions wouldn't be far behind. A layup by Maddie Haberthy followed by a three-pointer by Haley Scott (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) to bring the Lions back within three as the scoreboard read 23-20 in favor of the Ravens. Just as it seemed that the Lions would get close to tying the Ravens up the Ravens would continue to extend their lead. With 2:55 left in the second quarter Maddie Haberthy would help bring the Lions within three, trailing 27-24. With just over a minute to go in the second quarter Chloe Jansen brought the Lions within one. The Ravens made a layup before the Lions would tie the game for the first time off a three pointer by Haley Scott as the scoreboard read 29-29 with :45 seconds left until halftime. The lead would come next for the Lions as Maddie Haberthy made two free throws, giving the Lions a 31-29 lead. The Ravens wouldn't allow the Lions to enter halftime with the lead though as they threw down a three-pointer to beat the buzzer. At the half the Lions trailed the Ravens 32-31.

At the start of the third quarter Jaleah Fair-Harris (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) would take the lead from the Ravens with a three-pointer just :30 seconds into the new half. With this lead the Lions would continue to build on it and run with it for the rest of the game. Three minutes would go by with no scoring before Maddie Haberthy would end the scoreless streak with a layup. Mackenzie Marcum (Mason, Ohio/Kings) would follow with a three pointer as the Lions built a 39-32 lead over the Ravens with 6:13 left in the third quarter. The Ravens would get their first points of the quarter with two free throws with just less than five minutes remaining. Baskets would continue to come in favor of the Lions. At the 2:00 minute mark, Chloe Jansen would make another three-pointer for the day, giving the Lions a 48-34 lead. During the whole third quarter the Lions held the Ravens to just seven points during the 10 minutes of play.

With the final 10 minutes of action underway the Lions led the Ravens 50-39. The Ravens would try to come back within the Lions lead with two free throws and a three, making the score 50-44 in favor of the Lions. The Ravens went on to put a load of offensive pressure on the Lions. Over the next three minutes the Ravens would record seven points compared to the Lions two. With 5:02 remaining in the game the Lions barely held onto their lead, leading the Ravens 52-51. Two free throws made by Chloe Jansen followed by a three-pointer made by Mackenzie Marcum helped the Lions take back control of the game with the scoreboard reading 57-51. Less than four minutes remained on the clock as both teams kept taking their chances. Multiple free throws from both teams would be the only points made during the next two and a half minutes of play. As :10 seconds remained on the clock the Lions led 63-56. A layup made by the Ravens would try to give them hope in the final seconds before Maddie Haberthy would make the Lions final points of the game from two free throws. A buzzer beating three-pointer by the Ravens would be god but wouldn't be enough to push for an overtime. The Lions were able to record their first victory of the season with a 65-61 win over the Ravens of Anderson University.

Maddie Haberthy continue to play a major role on the court for the Lions, helping lead her team to victory on Saturday. Haberthy recorded 17 points against the Ravens, along with three rebounds, seven assists, and one block. Haley ScottAliyah Huff, and Chloe Jansen all made their impact heard in the game as well, all recording 10+ points throughout all four quarters. Scott led the team with three steals for the day while Jansen led the Lions with nine rebounds.

The Lions look to have a three-day break before being on the road Tuesday as they travel north to Wooster, Ohio. They will be taking on the College of Wooster in a non-conference game, with tip-off set for 2PM. With Saturday's win the Lions look to continue their energy into their upcoming games and get a winning streak started.
