Box Score CINCINNATI, OHIO- The Mount St. Joseph University men's basketball team welcomed the Pioneers of Transylvania University to the Harrington Center for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening. The Lions got the win over the first place Pioneers by a final score of 75-67 knocking the Pioneers out of first place in the HCAC standings.
The Lions went down early 8-6 but then proceeded to end the first half on a 26-12 scoring run to go into halftime with a double digit lead by a score 32-20. The Lions went on this run in large part to Brady Thomas (Grove City, Ohio/Bishop Ready) scoring 13 points on 5-7 shooting. The Lions also played lock-down defense holding the Pioneers to shooting 29% from the field in the first half.
The Lions led by 12 points for most of the second half until the Pioneers went on a run tying the game up at 53-53 with 7 minutes left. Thomas then proceeded to score five straight points to put the Lions back up 58-53. The Pioneers would then cut the lead to 2 points with 4 minutes left. The Lions would go on to end the game on a 16-10 scoring run to seal the upset over the Pioneers. The Lions were led by Thomas scoring 14 points off of 4-7 shooting and Devin Young (Crestwood, Ky. /South Oldham) scoring 11 points off of 4-4 shooting.
The Lions had 3 players ending in double figures, with Thomas leading the way with 27 points off the bench, followed by senior Cedric Woods (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) with 15, and Young with 11. The Lions got it done on the defensive end holding the Pioneers to 40% shooting from the floor and 12.5% from beyond the arc. The Lions bench outscored the Pioneers bench 33-12 in large part to Thomas' 27 point performance.
