LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the second season in a row your Mount St. Joseph University women's basketball team is headed south to Lexington, Ky. to compete for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Championship. Like last season, the Lions enter the tournament holding the #3 seed while facing the #2 seed Hanover Panthers.
The Lions are back in Lexington after a historic regular season. The Mount enters the tournament with a 21-5 record and a 14-4 record in the HCAC. Additionally, the Lions had their best start to the season since 1994-95 (8-0), set the single-game team rebound record with 63 versus Defiance and finished the season with more than 20 wins for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
Head Coach
Maisie Elston leads this young Lions squad with a talented backcourt duo of
Karlee Mills and
Morgan Jenkins. The pairing earned 2
nd Team All-HCAC Honors while leading the Lions offense. Mills enters the tournament leading the Lions in scoring averaging 13.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Mills has also been a threat defensively leading the HCAC in steals with 69. Jenkins enters the tournament as a do-it-all guard for the Lions. Jenkins leads the squad in assists averaging 12 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Jenkins has also shined defensively adding 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
Forwards
Madison Drummonds and
Whitney Warfel have also been outstanding heading into tournament play. Drummonds earned a 2
nd Team All-HCAC selection and was named HCAC Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks leading into the tournament. Drummonds leads the Lions in rebounding averaging 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1 block per game. Warfel was named to the HCAC Newcomer team after an impressive Freshman campaign so far. Warfel is averaging 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Senior
Chloe Jansen has been the leader the Lions needed this season. Jansen added her 5
th All-HCAC selection to her resume after earning All-HCAC Honorable Mention honors. Jansen has done a little of everything for The Mount averaging 7.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
The Lions are set to face the #2 seed Hanover Panthers on Friday, February 23
rd at 7PM. The winner advances to the HCAC Championship and will face the winner of #4 Franklin and #1 Transylvania on Sunday at 6PM.
