Women's Basketball Welcomes Shane Cleveland as New Assistant Coach

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph women's basketball team has its new assistant coach after the promotion of Shane Cleveland. Coach Cleveland was a part of the Lions staff last season as a volunteer assistant coach, he will now assume the role of coach Maisie Elston's top assistant. 

When asked about adding coach Cleveland in a bigger role going forward coach Elston had this to say, "Shane was a big part of our success last season, to have him taking on a bigger role within our program will help us continue to push our program to new heights."

Coach Cleveland graduated from Thomas College with a degree in Sports Management and Marketing with a minor in coaching. During his time at Thomas, he worked as a student-assistant coach with the basketball program. 

After finishing his undergraduate studies, he joined the staff at Earlham College as an assistant coach with the men's basketball program. While at Earlham he helped with practice planning, scouting reports and game planning. He assisted in helping the Quakers earn a place in the HCAC Championships for the first time in program history, while helping to develop four all-HCAC performers. During the COVID season of 2020-21, coach Cleveland acted as the interim head coach for four games, helping to lead the team through key challenges. He also took charge of the Quakers social media presence and administrative duties for the program. While coaching at Earlham, coach Cleveland also earned a Master of Education degree.

During his one season with the Lions as a volunteer, he was responsible for conducting individual film study with players in order to enhance performance and overall basketball IQ. He assisted coach Elston in game planning, scouting, recruiting and with in-game adjustments. He was also vital in helping the program build a positive and effective team culture, focused on player development and team success.
