Host Earlham College jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and held on to post a 5-2 win over the College of Mount St. Joseph. The Lions, who slipped to 14-16 overall, 7-8 in the HCAC, will be back in action on Apr. 21 when they host conference-foe Rose-Hulman in the beginning of a three-game series.
Earlham upped its advantage to 5-0 after their at-bat in the eighth inning while the Lions finally broke through in the ninth, plating two runs, on RBI hits by Kyle Ottaway (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) and Justin Shelton (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson). The Lions' ended the game with the tying run at the plate, stranding two runners on base.
Josh Denny (Huntsville, AL/Flushing), Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier), and Shelton each recorded two hits in the game. Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) pitched six innings, allowing four hits, two walks, and two runs - both earned - while striking out 11 batters, but fell to 2-3 with the loss.
