Mount ends 2011 season with a doubleheader sweep at Defiance College, 8-3 and 12-0

The College of Mount St. Joseph wrapped up its 2011 season campaign today when the swept a doubleheader at HCAC-foe Defiance College, 8-3 and 12-0. The Mount finishes the season 21-19 overall and 14-11 in the HCAC.

The Lions started action today with two runs in the first inning and after RBI hits by Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) and John Pasquale (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) led 4-1 in the second inning. A run-scoring double by Stroube in the sixth ininng enabled the Lions to take a 5-2, and they would add three more runs in the seventh, thanks to a solo home run by Trace Norton (Reading, OH/Reading) and a two-run blast by teammate Craig Shanks (Erlanger, KY/St. Henry). Pasquale led the offense with three hits while Stroube, Shanks and Kyle Ottaway (Farifield, OH/Fairfield) had two RBI each, as Mount starter Drew Ernst (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) pitched five innings for the win, his fourth of the season. Ernst allowed three hits, two runs (one earned), five walks and nine strikeouts.

Game two saw the Lions explode for a season-high tying 18 hits, as they jumped out to leads of 2-0 in the third and 5-0 by the fifth inning. Josh Denny (Huntsville, AL/Flushing) led the offense with two home runs, four runs scored and three RBI while Ottaway and Norton collected three hits each. Brandon Bouley (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton) tied a Mount game-high mark of 14 strikeouts, allowing just five hits and two walks while posting his second shutout of the season and his team-high sixth victory.
