The College of Mount St. Joseph women's volleyball team opened its 2011 season today at the University of Mount Union Invitational, falling in four sets to #15-ranked Hope College, 25-18, 11-25, 15-25, 21-25. The Mount also fell in action later in the night to the University of Mount Union, 25-13, 25-20, 25-21. The Lions are back in action in the tournament on Sept. 3 when they play Case Western Reserve University and Saint Mary's (IN) College.

In the first match, Bethani Ritter (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) helped the Lions break open a close first set, and aided by numerous Hope errors, the Lions claimed the game one victory. Hope College jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set two, and never looked back as they claimed that set by a 14-point margin. The Mount trailed 10-3 in set three before dropping that match and led 12-9 in set four, after a kill by Kat Roedig (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley), but turned over the lead at 18-17, thanks in part to the Dutch's balanced hitting attack.

Ritter led the Mount with 10 kills and two service aces while teammates Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) and Torrie Whitmore (Mason, OH/Mason) chipped in 17 and 14 assists, respectively. Three different Lions' players had 12 digs each.

Ritter added nine kills against Mount Union while Whitmore chipped in 14 assists, as the Lions fell in three sets to the host team. Jaclyn Stenger (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had a team-high 14 digs and two service aces while Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) and Roedig had two block solos each.
