Mount baseball team swept in weekend series at Anderson University

HCAC co-leader Anderson University gained a three-game series sweep over the Lions this weekend, winning a doubleheader on Saturday, 5-2 and 19-5, and claiming a third-game win on Sunday, 2-0. The Mount, 11-23 overall, 4-17 in the HCAC, is scheduled to end 2012 season play this coming weekend when they host a conference series against Defiance College, starting May 4.

In game one on Saturday, the Ravens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Lions cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI each by Derek Allen (New Alsace, IN/East Central) and Jonathan Roberts (Heborn, KY/Conner). The Mount would get no closer as the Ravens added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, off Mount starter Aaron Sparks (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle), who fell to 1-5 on the season. Garrett Edwards (Reading, OH/Reading) had a double for the Mount, one of five hits the team collected in the game.

The Ravens reached five Mount pitchers for 19 hits and 19 runs in the second game on Saturday, in which the Mount held leads to 3-0 after one inning and 4-0 after two innings. Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) suffered the pitching setback, dropping to 1-4 this season. Kyle Ottaway (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) paced the Lions' offense, collecting two doubles and a home run, along with three RBI. Josh Denny (Huntsville, AL/Flushing) and Justin Shelton (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) collected two hits each.

Anderson scored single runs in the third and sixth innings on Sunday, blanking the Mount on five hits and allowing two walks. Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Lions, allowing five hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and recording four strikeouts. He slipped to 3-5 with the loss. Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had two of the Lions five hits.
