Visiting Defiance College jumped out to early leads in both games today as they collected a doubleheader sweep over the College of Mount St. Joseph at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium. The Lions, 11-26 overall, 4-20 in the HCAC, will conclude 2012 play on May. 5 when they host the Yellow Jackets in the finale of the three-game HCAC series.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings in the first game, knocking Mount starter Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) from the game. The Mount got single runs in the third inning and sixth inning, and were out-hit 12-6 in the game. Four Lions' pitchers walked 14 Defiance batters, while Shaw dropped to 1-5 on the season. Kyle Ottaway (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) had two hits for the Mount.
The Lions posted three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one, thanks in part to a two-run home run by Ottaway, but were unable to hold the lead as Defiance forged ahead, 4-3 by the end of third inning. The Yellow Jackets would push that lead out to 7-3 by the fifth, and allow just two more Lions' runs - in the seventh inning - on an RBI each by Craig Shanks (Erlanger, KY/St. Henry) and Garrett Edwards (Reading, OH/Reading). Defiance collected 17 hits in the nightcap, as they went on to their 14th win of the season. Shanks led the Mount with four hits, while teammates Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) and Ottaway collected two hits each. Mount starter Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) pitched into the fifth inning and was charged with the loss, falling to 3-6 on the season.
