Mount baseball squad falls by a 9-5 score at Transylvania University

Host Transylvania University pounded out 12 hits, including six extra-base hits on Tuesday afternoon, en route to a 9-5 win over the Lions. The Mount, 6-16 overall, 2-8 in the HCAC, will resume action this coming weekend when they host a three-game series against conference-foe Bluffton University on April 12-13.

The Pioneers jumped out to leads of 4-0 after two innings and 8-0 after four innings of play. The Lions cut the deficit to 9-3 in the seventh inning, thanks in part to a two-run single by Cole Wendeln (Florence, KY/Boone County). They would add single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, on a home run by Spencer Gommel (Greensburg, IN/Oldenburg Academy) and an RBI single by teammate Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central), but would get no closer. Taylor Simpson (Monroe, OH/Monroe) and Werner led the offense with two hits each while Wendeln added two RBI.

Jacob Hoying (Russia, OH/Russia) started an took the pitching loss, falling to 1-2 this season. Four Mount relievers followed Hoying to the mound, combining for 4 1/3 innings pitched and allowing one run. Lions' batters struck out 13 times in the game and left eight runners on base.
