Mount women's basketball team clips visiting College of Wooster at end, 66-65

Box Score

The Mount's Erica Walsh (Louisville, KY/Sacred Heart Academy) converted the second of two free throw attempts with one second left in the game on Tuesday afternoon, helping her team to a 66-65 win at home over the College of Wooster. The Lions, 3-5 on the season, will return to action on Dec. 29 against Wittenberg in their first game of the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic. The three wins by the Mount equals the team's final win total for each of the past two seasons.

The Mount's game today against the Fighting Scots started much the same way as this past weekend's game. Lauren Hill (Greendale, IN/Lawrenceburg) started once again for the Lions and scored the game's first points after the opening tip. Wooster would lead through the early going, until the Mount tied the game at eight-all. Tara Dennis (Batavia, OH/Williamsburg) and others helped the home team grab a five point lead with just over 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half, only to see the Fighting Scots bounce back, behind long range shooting, to knot the score at 29-all, with three minutes left in the opening half. The Mount would then go on an offensive splurge, using their inside and outside game, to produce a 38-32 halftime advantage.

The Lions overcame nine, Wooster three-pointers in the first half by out-shooting their opponents, 40 to 38 percent from the field, making seven-of-10 free throws, holding a 26-16 rebounding lead, and forcing seven turnovers while committing just five miscues.

The Mount used it height advantage well in the early going of the second half, as the Lions pushed their lead out to 12 points with 14:20 left in the game. Wooster, however, gradually whittled away at the deficit, and down 55-53, hit a three-pointer with 5:36 left on the clock to grab a 56-55 lead. Ahead 61-60, the Mount's Brilyn Webb (Oxford, OH/Talawanda) connected on a three-point play with 1:27, to give her team a 63-61 lead. Wooster tied the score at 63-all with 1:13 left, and another Webb layup at 1:01 put the Lions up, 65-63. Wooster would knot the score again, this time at 65-all with 36 seconds left, setting the stage for Walsh's heroics. A turnover by both teams gave the ball back to the Lions with 10 seconds left. The Mount ran the clock down to one second as Walsh was fouled. She missed the first free throw but hit the second, giving the Mount a one-point margin. Wooster could not get off a final shot in the one second left on the clock.

Webb led the team with a game-high 17 points, while Dennis chipped in 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Taylor Brown (Peebles, OH/Peebles) had six assists for the Mount.
