Visiting Benedictine University broke open a tie game in the third quarter, out-scoring the Mount 4-1 over 15 minutes of play, and went on to post a 12-7 victory in Midwest Lacrosse Conference play. The Lions, 1-6 overall, 0-2 in the MLC, is back in action on Mar. 19 at Transylvania University.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game, only to see the Mount fight back and score four, unanswered goals giving the home team Lions a 4-2 advantage with just over 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Benedictine tied the game at four-all before the half. The Eagles would add two straight goals in the third quarter, to grab a 6-5 advantage, and the Mount's Cory Wojciechowski (Las Vegas, NV/Community College East) fired in a goal to cut the deficit to 6-5 with 3:22 left in the third quarter. Benedictine would then score the next two goals, pushing their lead out to an 8-5 margin. The Lions would get to within two again, 9-7 when Jesse Mayer (Crestwood, KY/South Oldham) scored with 8:52 on the fourth quarter clock. The Lions would get no closer as the Eagles scored the game's final three goals.
Ryan Gallagher (Chicago, IL/St. Rita) and Wojciechowski each had two goals for the Mount. The Mount out-shot Benedictine 34-32 and 20-18 in shots on goal. The Mount won 16-of-23 face-offs. Joe Illencik (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions, recording five saves.
