Host Anderson Unviersity pushed across the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday afternoon, to defeat the Lions' 6-5 in the opening game of the two team's three-game series this weekend. The Mount, 6-9-1, 1-3 HCAC will resume action on Mar. 30 with a doubleheader against the Ravens.
The game saw four errors on each team and six unearned runs during the nine-inning affair. The Mount led 1-0 after one inning, and held a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) scored on a wild pitch. The Lions' plated two unearned runs in the ffith, to forge ahead 4-0 but Anderson got back into the game in the sixth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly, and tied the game in seventh, at four-all, thanks to three runs on two hits (RBI singles). The Mount led 5-4 after their at-bat in the eighth, thanks to an error by the Ravens, but saw the home team tie the game at eight-all in the bottom of the frame, on a single. Rob Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) recorded a two-out single for the Lions in the top of the ninth but was stranded on base. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, a Ravens' batter reached second base due to a Mount error, and was plated with the winning run on a single.
Alex Cole (Ross, OH/Ross) started for the Lions, going 6 1/3 innings. Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg) suffered the tough-luck loss, pitching 2 1/3 innings, and allowing two unearned runs. The Mount out-hit Anderson, 12-7, with Cotton pacing the offense with two hits and two RBI. Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin), Michael Gill (Burlingtion/KYConner), and Jack Meininger (Cincinnati, OH/Summit Country Day) had two hits each. Anderson went to 10-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference with the victory.
