Lions' men's lacrosse team posts first win of season with a 6-5 victory at Alma College

Mount freshman Jesse Mayer (Crestwood, KY/South Oldham) scored his game-high third goal with just 30 seconds left in the game on Saturday, giving the Lions their first win of the season, a 6-5 win at Alma College. The Mount, 1-4 this season, will next play on Mar. 10 at Hanover College in their 2014 MLC opener.

In a low-scoring contest on Saturday between the two schools, Cory Wojciechowski (Las Vegas, NV/Community College East) got the Mount on the scoreboard late in the first quarter. Alma tied the scored at one-all scoring just before the first quarter ended, and the Scots added three second quarter goals erasing a Mount 2-1 lead.

After Alma held a 4-2 halftime lead, the two teams played a scoreless third quarter. The home team pushed their advantage to 5-2 early in the fourth quarter, leading to the Lions' comeback for the win. Joey Ely (Centerville, OH/Centerville) and Mayer scored the first two goals of a four-goal Mount scoring spree, while Wojciechowski's second goal of the game, coming at 6:38 in the fourth, tied the game at five-all. Mayer registered his game-winning goal over six minutes later as the Lions' garnered the victory.

Alma out-shot the Mount 24-21 in the game, including 14-12 in shots on goal. Joe Illencik (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) played all 60 minutes in goal and had nine saves.
