The Lions junped out to a 7-0 lead on Tuesday afternoon, and coasted to a 7-1 win at Earlham College, ending their three-game losing streak. The Mount, 7-11-1 overall, 2-5 in the HCAC, will resume conference play on Apr. 4 when they kick off a home, three-game series against Defiance College.
Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) got the Lions' scoring started against the Quakers in the first inning, blasting a two-run home run - his team-high fifth of the season. Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had an RBI single in the second inning, staking his team to a 3-0 lead. The Mount added two more runs in the fourth inning, on a sacrifice fly and and RBI single by Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central). Two more runs pushed the lead out to 7-0 in the sixth inning, thanks to an unearned run and a run-scoring hit by Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle). The Mount's Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) tossed seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and no runs, with two walks and four strikeouts. Earlham scored its lone run in the eighth inning off Mount reliever Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburh, IN/Lawrenceburg), who pitched two innings and had three Ks.
The Mount out-hit Earlham, 11-5, with Browning leading the way with three hits. Teammates Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), Rob Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West), and Werner had two hits each. Stevens evened his 2014 record at 1-1 with the win.
