Host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology recorded 20 runs and 33 hits against the Mount in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, as they posted a doubleheader sweep, 13-12 and 7-1, and comtinue their hold on second play in the HCAC. The Mount slipts to 11-13-1 overall, 6-7 in the conference and will complete the weekend series at Rose-Hulman on April 13 with a game against the Fightin' Engineers.
The Mount jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their at-bat in the first inning of game one, thanks to a grand slam home run by Michael Gill (Burlington, KY/Conner). A two-run single by Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) in the second inmproved the Lions' lead to 8-2, but Rose-Hulman fought, and by the end of the third inning trailed by an 8-5 score. They tied the game at eight-all in the fourth inning, but the Mount jumped back out, 11-8 in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to RBI hits by three different players. Rose would tie the game at 11 apiece in the sixth inning, and would push across two more runs in the seventh to take a 13-11 lead. The Mount scored their final run in the ninth ining, to cut the deficit to 13-12, but would leave two runners on base to end the game.
Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), Tyler Haubner (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) and Cotton led the Mount's 11 hit attack with two hits each, as Gill and Cotton each recorded four RBI. Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had two walks. Alex Cole (Ross, OH/Ross) started for the Lions, and was followed to the mound by three relievers. Rob Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) suffered the loss, his first decision of the season.
Rose-Hulman scored three runs in the first inning of game two, thanks to an RBI double and two-run single. The Lions cut the deficit to 3-1 in the second inning, as Matt Hofmann (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) had an RBI single, plating Gill. That would be all the runs the Mount would get in the second game, as they were held to nine hits. Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) and Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) each had two hits, while Cotton chipped in two doubles.
Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) started for the Lions, going six innings. His record dropped to 3-3 on the season. Kyle Shepherd (Eaton, OH/Eaton) and Paul Spaulding (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
