Mount baseball team drops weekend series to Manchester University

HCAC-leader Manchester College pounded out double-digit totals in hits all three games, and took advantage of Mount fielding errors, as they posted a three-game series sweep at UC's Marge Schott Stadium on Friday and Saturday. The Lions fall to 11-18-1, 6-12 in the conference, while the Spartans improve to 20-11 overall, 14-4 in the HCAC. The Mount is back in action on April 22 with a conference game at Transylvania University.

Manchester won game one of the series, and game one of the Friday doubleheader, by a 12-6 score. After ties of 3-all in the third inning, and 4-all in the fifith inning, the Spartans bolted out to leads of 6-4, 8-4 and 9-4 over the next three innings, finishing the scoring in the ninth. The Lions, who scored two unearned runs in the final frame, had 13 hits in the game, as Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY?Boone County) and Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) each collected three hits, with Alley chipping in two RBI. Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) started on the mound and pitched six innings, as his record fell to 3-4 on the season.

The Spartans continued their strong offensive attack in the second game of the doubleheader, posting a 9-0 win, as they scored three runs in the third inning, two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the seventh inning. They collected 12 hits and held the Lions to five hits, as the Mount committed three errors. Alex Cole (Ross, OH/Ross) started and pitched six innings, while Michael Gill (Burlington, KY/Conner) had two hits.

The two teams completed the season series on Saturday afternoon, with Manchester winning, 13-2, in eight innings. The Spartans led 2-1 after an inning of action, and pushed that lead out to 5-1 by the fourth inning. They added five more runs in the fifth inning, as they recorded 13 hits off off three Mount pitchers, including starter Chase Stevens (Harrison, OH/Harrison), who pitched five innings and is now 3-5 on the season. The Mount had nine hits and committed six errors in the game, allowing five unearned runs. Cotton paced the offense with three hits, while Braden Alcorn (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) added two hits.
