Host Transylvania University broke open a close game in the sixth inning, scoring eight runs on six hits and a Mount error, as they defeated the Lions, 13-8 on Tuesday evening. The Mount, 11-19-1 overall and 6-13 in the HCAC, will resume action on April 25 when they begin a three-game weekend series at Bluffton University.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Mount starter Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) but the Lions' Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) tied the game at two-all in the third inning when he blasted a two-run home run. The Mount took a 3-2 lead in the game in the fourth inning when Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) plated Rob Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) with a run-scoring single. Transy tied the game at three-all in the bottom of the the frame, and by the end of the sixth inning, led 13-3, thanks in part to an eight-run sixth inning, that included a two-run double and two-run home run. The closed the deficit to 13-4 in the eighth inning, and scored four times in the ninth to close the scoring.
Collin Shaw took the loss and fell to 2-3 on the season, pitching four innings. He was followed to the mound by three relievers. Transy out-hit the Mount, 16-12 in the game, but left 11 runners on base to the Lions' nine stranded runners. The Pioneers were eight-of-19 with runners in scoring position while the Lions were five-of-13 with RISP. Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had two hits and two runs scored while Leytze added two hits. Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) and Rob Shaw also had two hits while Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft) had two walks.
