Lions' women's volleyball team goes 1-1 in first day of action at the HCAC/OAC Challenge

The Mount's women's volleyball team began play on Friday in the HCAC/OAC Challenge, held in Bluffton, OH, by posting a 1-1 mark. The Lions opened with a 3-0 loss to Ohio Northern University, and then rebounded later in the day to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory over Capital University. The Mount, 8-7 on the season, will return to play in the two-day tournament on Sept. 20 when they take on Muskingum University and Baldwin Wallace University.

In the Lions' match against ONU, in which they lost by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-22, Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, IN/East Central) had 11 kills and nine digs. Teammate Taylor Ruder (Oxford, OH/Talawanda) recorded a match-high 13 digs while Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) had 25 assists and seven digs. The Mount had 31 kills in the match, a registered a .113 hitting percentage.

The Mount won sets one and three against Capital, but fell in sets two, 25-15, and four, 25-23, forcing a deciding fifth set, which they captured by a 15-11 score. The Lions had a strong hitting attack throughout the match against the Crusaders, finishing the last two games hitting over .250 each. They went on to post 61 kills in the match, and a .173 hitting mark. Wilgenbusch added a match-high 17 kills and 14 digs in the five-set match, while Hannah Losey (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe) had 13 kills and a team-high 10 digs. Cheyenne Tobler (Verona, KY/St. Henry) chipped in 12 kills and 12 digs, while Ruder had 15 digs and four the Mount's 11 service aces. Davis recorded 50 assists and eight digs and Emily Bostian (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) led a strong defensive effort with one block solo and five block assists. The Mount had two block solos and 16 blocks assists in the match.
