Mount baseball team claims 2015 home opener over Wilmington College, 9-7

The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team jumped out to an 8-1 lead after four innings, and held off a late Wilmington College challenge as they posted a 9-7 home win over the Quakers on Monday night. The Lions, 5-3 on the season, will be back in action at Kenyon College on March 18.

Wilmington scored the game's first run, in the first inning, only to see the Lions bounce back and score three runs in the first and four runs in the third inning, with Nick Boardman (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle0 doing the most damage with three RBI during that span. The Mount pushed the lead out to 9-1 by the end of the sixth inning, on an RBI double by Zach Farmer (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West). The Mount was blanked on the scoreboard the rest of the way, as the visiting Quakers fought back to pull to within two runs in the ninth inning, ending the game with the tying runs in scoring position.

The Lions pounded out 13 hits in the win, with Boardman and Farmer collecing three hits each. Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) and Drew Werner (Sinman, IN/East Central) had two hits each. Boardman also had three RBI while Farmer recorded two RBI. Matt Hofmann (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) started and pitched five innings, collecting the win, while Werner claimed his second save of the season.
