Mount baseball splits home doubleheader against Hanover College

The Mount St. Joseph baseball team split their first series against an HCAC team. The Lions took on Hanover College where they lost the first game 7-6, and bounced back in the second game, winning by a score of 3-2 with the Lions out hitting Hanover 20-15 on the day. The Mount bettered their record to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC. The two teams played again on March 22 at Midland Field in Amelia, OH.

Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) pitched in the first game where he finished 7.1 innings and gave up 10 hits. Polking had one strikeout on the day with his record dropping to 0-1. Paul Spaulding (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) came in for the last 1.2 innings where he gave up no hits and no walks.

Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) helped the Lions out by recording three RBI’s in the first game, scoring two of them with a double into left field and a single through the right side for the third. In the second game, Browning had one hit and walk. Corey Reimer helped by having four hits combined from both games. Reimer went on to score three times in the doubleheader.

In the second game, Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg) took the mound for the Lions where he pitched seven scoreless innings and racked up three strikeouts. Drew Werner closed the game out, earning him his first win of the season.

Ryan McCauley (Canal Winchester, OH/Madison Christian) finished with an RBI on a sacrifice bunt, helping the Lions score the first run of the game in the fifth inning. McCauley had only one hit on the day. Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) singled to right field giving him an RBI, and the only earned run for the Lions in the second game.

The Lions scored their final run in the ninth inning of the second game to win the game on a throwing error by the third basemen, allowing Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) to score. Werner finished with finished with two hits in the game. The next game for the Mount baseball team is on March 22, at Amelia, OH (Midland Field).
