It was a tale of two different pitching performances on Sunday afternoon for the Mount at Defiance College, as the Lions split a doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets, winning game one, 6-3; and dropping the nightcap, 16-1, in seven innings. The Mount, 7-9 overall, 2-5 in the HCAC, resumes play on March 31 with a home game (Xavier University) against conference-rival Earlham College.
Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg) tossed eight innings in game one, scattering seven hits, and allowing only one run and a walk, with two strikeouts, as won in his first decision of the 2015 campaign. The Mount jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings, and added two more runs in the sixth, thanks to RBI hits by Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) and Zach Farmer (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West). The Mount collected 14 hits in the game as Ryan McCauley (Canal Winchester, OH/Madison Christian), Farmer and Cotton each had two hits and Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had three hits and two runs scored. Defiance led 10 runners on base in the game, and went two-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The Yellow Jackets got their offense started early and often in game two, as they raced out to a 9-0 lead by the end of two innings, en route to scoring runs in every inning. Defiance reached six Mount pitchers for 11 hits, including two home runs, in the series finale, as the Yellow Jackets took the series, two games to one. Nick Boardman (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had two of the Mount's four hits in the second game, including a double, while McCauley added a double. Mount starter Matt Hofmann (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) suffered the loss, falling to 1-2.
