Lions' baseball team upended by Earlham College, 14-8

Box Score

Visiting Earlham College jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings, and went on to a 14-8 win on Tuesday afternoon against the Mount at Xavier University. The Lions, 7-10 overall, 2-6 in the HCAC, will be back in action on April 1 when they play a non-conference game at Ohio Northern University.

Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) got the Mount on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, with a solo home run, before the Quakers added five more runs in the seventh. The Lions would rebound for six runs in the bottom of the frame, cutting the deficit to 10-7 but they would get no closer. Zach Farmer (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West) ended the Lions' scoring in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double, as the Mount went to 0-2 on the season against Earlham.

Farmer and Werner each had three hits and two RBI to lead the 12-hit attack, while teammate Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) and Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft) had two hits each.

Jacob Gunnell (Hamilton, OH/Fairfield) started and took the loss for the Mount, pitching five innings. He was followed by three Lions' relievers.
