Manchester University completed a three-game series sweep over the Mount's baseball today when they posted wins by the score of 8-4 and 12-4. The Lions drop to 10-18 overall this season, 5-13 in the HCAC while Manchester improves to 17-11, 10-8. The Mount is slated to return to action on April 21 at Transylvania University (9-19, 6-12).
The Spartans led game one by a 4-0 score after four innings of action, and held a 5-1 lead heading into action in the eighth inning. The Mount's lone run came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Manchester tacked on three more runs, however, in the eighth , while a three-run home run by the Lions' Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) ended the scoring in the ninth. Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County), Zach Farmer (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West), and Nick Boardman (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) each had two hits to pace the Lions' offense. Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) pitched seven innings and was tagged with the loss, while Paul Spaulding (Cincinnat, OH/La Salle) tosed two innings of relief. The Lions stranded nine runners on base in the game.
The two teams played close throughout the second game, with Manchester scoring first and holding a 2-0 lead, before the Lions cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Cory Reimer (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton Badin). The Spartans pushed their advantage out to 4-2 in the sixth but saw the Lions score two in the seventh inning, thanks to a two-run homer by Cotton, which tied the score. Manchester then took reached numerous pitchers in the Mount's bullpen for hits and walks, as they posted six times in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth. Reimer and Cotton each had two hits. Nathan Hunter (Veva, IN/Switzerland County) suffered the loss in relief.
