Lions' baseball team splits Saturday twin-bill against second place HCAC-rival Rose-Hulman

The Mount received two, solidly pitched games on Saturday at home on Senior Day against Rose-Hulman, winning the first game by a 4-3 score and dropping the second game in extra innings, 2-1. The Lions, 13-22 overall and 8-17 in the HCAC, will conclude 2015 season action on May 3 when they complete their three-game weekend series against the Fightin' Engineers with a single, nine inning game at noon, which will be played at Midland Field in Amelia, OH. Rose-Hulman is currently in second place in the conference, having qualified for one HCAC post-season tournament spot, thanks to a 16-9 HCAC mark. They are also 24-14 overall this season.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one against Mount starter Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg), before the Lions cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning. Nick Boardman (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning, and teammate Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft) plated Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) with a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give the Mount a 3-2 lead. The Lions would build their lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning, thanks to an RBI double by Zach Farmer (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West). Rose-Hulman added a ninth innign run to make the score 4-3, but the Mount's Paul Spaulding (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle)would shut the door on any other Rose attempts to score to pick up his first save of the season.

Lambert tossed 7 1/3 innings in the opener, allowing seven hits and two walks while winning his third game of the season in four decisions. Kyle Kittle (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg) and Farmer led the 10-hit attack with two hits each. The Lions had six extra-base hits in the game.

Game two of the doubleheader saw the two team's locked in a pitcher's dual, with Mount senior Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) leading the way for the Lions. Rose-Hulman broke out on top first, with a run in the second inning, while the Lions knotted the score at 1-all in the sixth inning when Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) ripped a double to left-center, scoring Cory Reimer (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton Badin). The two teams would play scoreless until the 10th inning, when Rose-Hulman scored the go-ahead run, with an RBI groundout off Mount reliever Casey Wagner (West Harrison, ON/Franklin County). The Mount was retired in order in their half of the 10th inning.

Polking pitched nine innings, allowing eight hits and strking out four batters. Wagner and Farmer pitched in relief in the night-cap. Browning and Reimer each had two hits in the second game. The Mount was zero-for-seven with runners in scoring position.

Mount seniors Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) and Polking were honored before the first game.
