THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph and Franklin had a hard fought match in this HCAC showcase. Both teams played at a high level, but Franklin finishes strong to win the match 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
This intense conference matchup started out as expected as both teams were trading points back and forth. Multiple kills by Briana Looney were able to keep the lions in the game. The Lions were able to pull away and win a close first set 25-21. The battle continued between these teams in the second set. After battling back from being down by 4 points the Lions were able to tie the set up at 20 apiece. Unfortunately, Franklin was able to finish the second set beating the Lions 25-23.
The third set was mainly controlled by Franklin. After being tied at 11, Franklin began to run away with it scoring 13 points to make their lead 24-12. Franklin went on to win the third set 25-14 and take the lead in the match 2-1. But the Lions were not done yet. Senior Jessica Wilgenbusch was determined to get her lions back in the game as she recorded 6 kills in the fourth set to help her lions take a demanding lead. The Lions with great teamwork were able to hold off the Grizzlies and win the fourth set 25-10.
The fifth set was tightly contested as both teams were fighting to win the match. After being tied at 5, the Grizzlies began to pull away scoring the next 5 points. The Lions continued to fight but were not able to catch up to Franklin as they lost the final set 15-10.
STANDOUTS:
Briana Looney had the greatest kill percentage for the lions at .304 executing 11 kills on 23 attempts. Kama Charles had a great defensive game for the Lions recording 24 digs on the day.
