Mount St. Joseph battles Transylvania to a 1-1 draw

Box Score

LOCATION: Transylvania Athletic Complex (Lexington, KY)

THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph (6-2-4, 1-0-1 HCAC) traveled to Lexington, Kentucky to take on the Pioneers of Transylvania. After two overtime periods and 110 minutes of action the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In a game that was dominated by defense, scoring chances were few and far between for both teams. Through the first 45 minutes though Transylvania was able to tally 10 shot attempts, with the Lions only having one shot on goal. Neither team though was able to tally a goal through the first half of play.

Scoring chances were more plentiful for both sides through the early going in the second half. The teams combined for five shots on goal through the first eight minutes of the second half. That fifth opportunity would provide the games first goal. That goal was scored by Transylvania's Blake Chidester in the 53rd minute of play.

The Lions would answer back quickly less than three minutes later. As Alex Gross found the back of the net for the Lions in the 56th minute. At the end of regulation the game stood at a 1-1 tie and overtime would have to be played.

There was only one real scoring chance created in either overtime. It came in the games final minute as Transylvania ripped a shot, and the Lions Cody Kappes was able to come through with a big save in the 109th minute of play, to preserve the 1-1 tie for the Lions.

STANDOUTS:

Gross was the lone goal scorer for the Lions, he was also one of the Lions ironmen, playing 100 of the possible 110 minutes.

The Lions had two players play the entire 110 minutes. Tyler Schumann and Michael Huber played every second of the two overtime thriller.

UP NEXT:

The Lions will travel on Saturday to Earlham to take on the Quakers in another key HCAC match-up. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 PM kick-off.
