THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph (6-0) is in Florida on their annual Spring Break trip and kicked off the week with two wins over Trine University (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1:
The Lions were able to get a good start out of freshman Austin Richey who scattered 5 hits and 4 walks over his 4 innings of work. He struggled a bit with control he was able limit Trine to one run and keep the Lions in the game.
With Trine holding a 1-0 lead the Lions struck back in the bottom of the 4th. Zak Farmer led off the inning with a single to centerfield. Farmer advanced to second on a fielder's choice and to third on an error. Ryan McCauley stepped to the plate and tied the game with a single to left.
The Lions got 3 scoreless innings out of their bullpen, Mike Hilliard , Malik Zuberi and Matt Hofmann each pitched one inning.
The score stood 1-1 with the Lions batting in the bottom of the 7th inning. McCauley singled to open the inning, and advanced to second on walk. Later in the inning Hofmann stepped to the plate with two out and he singled, driving in the game winner for a walk-off win.
GAME 2:
This game like the first came down to the final innings, and actually was won in extras by the Lions. The Lions got a solid start from Wyatt Myers, and good relief from Alex Wagner and Zuberi.
The offense was paced by the top 4 spots in the lineup as they combined to go 10 for 20 on the game. The Lions pounded out 15 total hits, and seven different players drove in a run.
The game went into the 8th inning tied, but the Lions were able to dent the plate 4 times, capitalizing on 3 errors in the inning to put the game away.
