THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph (18-8, 7-8 HCAC) traveled to Franklin University (11-7, 6-9 HCAC) and had a disappointing start to the series dropping game 1 by a score of 8-3, but the Lions bounced back nicely with 2 wins on Saturday the scores 6-3, and 9-6 respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1
In game one on Friday night the Lions sent Wyatt Myers to the hill to start, and he really struggled in the early going. In the first two innings Myers surrendered 7 runs on 8 hits, 4 of which went for extra-bases, 2 being home-runs. After the shaky start to the game though, Myers settled in nicely only allowing 2 hits over the next 5 innings.
Offensively the Lions were unable to mount enough offense to climb back into the game. Scoring only 3 runs, one of which came off the bat of Simon Schaefer, his second of the season. Matt Hofmann added 2 hits for the Lions.
In the end the poor first 2 innings on the mound doomed the Lions as the eventually fell 8-3.
Game 2
In game 2 Alex Wagner got the ball for the Lions to start, and the freshman continued to impress. Wagner did not miss many bats, allowing the Grizzlies to pound out 9 hits. The Lions starter though only allowed Franklin to turn those 9 hits into 2 runs. Wagner moved to 4-0 on the season, and is 2nd in the HCAC in ERA at 1.69.
Offensively the Lions were carried by Ryan McCauley, and Schaefer who combined to go 4 for 8 driving in 4 for of the Lions 6 runs.
Wagner's stellar start combined with the timely hitting of McCauley and Schaefer helped the Lions to secure a much needed 6-3 victory.
Game 3
Game 3 was an offensive explosion compared to the first 2 games of the series as the teams combined for 20 hits and 15 runs in game 3 alone. Paul Spaulding got the start for the Lions and had a very solid outing. Spaulding pitched 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 5 runs (4 earned), but kept the Grizzlies from ever taking the lead in the game.
The Grizzlies scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th to knot the score at 5. The Lions answered back right away as they put 2 on the board in the top of the 6th, they would go on to add 2 in the 9th to put the game away.
The Lions offense was paced by Kyle Kittle, Austin, Richey and Jordan Corbett combined to go 7 for 14 in the game, Kittle added 3 RBI and Corbett had 2 RBI.
Hofmann was able to pick up his 5th save of the season, helping the Lions nail down the 9-6 victory.
