THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph (15-6, 4-4 HCAC) on the strength of very solid starting pitching was able to sweep Anderson University (6-12, 3-3 HCAC) in a weekend series at Midland Field. The Lions were able to get back to .500 in HCAC play with the sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1
The first game of the series saw the Lions send Wyatt Myers to the mound, and the sophomore did not disappoint. Myers went 6.1 innings giving up only 5 hits, and 3 earned runs while striking out 4. Jacob Gunnell followed Myers, and pitch 1.2 innings without allowing a hit, and striking out 3. Matt Hofmann finished the game off pitching a scoreless ninth inning, collecting his 4th save in as many opportunities.
In what would become a trend over the weekend, the Lions were paced by Nick Browning, who collected 2 hits in 4 at-bats and drove in 3 runs. The 3 RBI for Browning came on a bases clearing double in the 5th inning that put the Lions ahead for good.
The Lions took game 1 by a score of 6-4.
Game 2
The Lions sent freshman Alex Wagner to the mound for the second game of friday's double-header. Wagner was very good on the hill for the Mount going 6 strong innings, scattering 6 hits and allowing only 3 runs (1 earned).
The Lions offense was able to push 10 runs across the plate in game 2, even though only tallying 7 hits, they were able to take advantage of control problems by the pitchers of the Ravens, who walked 7 in the game. Browning again led the charge from the lead-off spot going 2-3 in the game and scoring 4 times. Zak Farmer was able to drive in 3, in a 1-4 game with a double.
The final score of the second game saw the Lions victorious again with a score of 10-5.
Game 3
In a weekend full of solid pitching for the Lions, they absolutely saved the best for last. Saturday the Lions sent Paul Spaulding to the hill and he was razor sharp from the start. Spaulding threw 7 innings of 1 hit, shutout baseball, by far his best outing on the season. The Ravens were really never able to even threaten while he was on the mound.
Again the Lions were led at the plate by Browning and Farmer, as they combined to to 7 for 8 in the game.
The Lions were able to get the sweep, winning the final game of the series by a score of 7-3
